From Modesto to Manteca and Turlock to Tracy, driver's new-car shoppers are sure to appreciate the latest news to come out of the Toyota camp. The automaker recently announced that its iconic Camry and flagship Avalon models will offer all-wheel-drive. It will be the first Camry with AWD in 30 years and the first time ever for the Avalon.

AWD Performance with Sedan Convenience

Toyota will base its "Dynamic Torque Control AWD" system on the same AWD technology it uses in the adventurous RAV4 compact crossover. There are many versions of AWD technology on the market today. However, Toyota's Dynamic Torque Control is specifically designed to provide traction on slick surfaces without affecting the vehicle's fuel economy.

The Dynamic Torque Control system distributes engine power to the wheels when it senses a slippery surface. When all-wheel-drive isn't needed, the system disengages from the rear driveshaft and operates on front-wheel-drive, for smooth and efficient operation for driving on stretches of dry highway.

It's a welcome addition to the two popular Toyota models, which provide sedan comfort and executive style. The company also points out that the Camry and Avalon AWD models will not sacrifice passenger or trunk space to their front-wheel drive (FWD) counterparts.

New Generation Architecture

The Camry, Avalon, and RAV4 are all based on Toyota's New Global Architecture (TGNA) platform. TGNA represents an entirely new approach to building automobiles, that integrates engineering and design with production and materials. Toyota expects TGNA to enable it to continue to offer innovations like the AWD Camry and Avalon in response to the evolving global demand for efficient and enjoyable vehicles.
