Toyota RAV4 Stands Tall Against the Competition in Modesto

When it comes to finding the ideal combination of comfort, capacity, and capability, it's hard to beat the utility of compact crossover SUV. Crossovers offer increased capability and higher seating position compared to the typical sedan; but don't take up as much space as a regular full-size SUV and are easier to maneuver. They also get significantly better gas mileage.

Drivers from Turlock and Tracy have more than a few options in the crowded compact crossover market, and there are many similarities among them. However, closer inspection reveals that the Toyota RAV4 offers an ownership experience that is difficult to match. Out of all the competitors in its class, RAV4 is most often compared to the Honda CR-V. A popular vehicle thought it is, when matched head-to-head with the RAV4 a few deficiencies are revealed.

Both RAV4 and CR-V are popular options in the compact crossover segment, and for good reason. Both are industry veterans, having been around for more than two decades. They are also similar in dimensions and serve similar purposes. But, when you compare them closely, you can see RAV4 stands a little taller. Here are a few significant differences.

  • DRIVETRAIN: Under the hood, the RAV4 features an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission and is set in motion by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The CR-V's 2.4-liter engine lags behind at 184-horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque.

For real-world perspective, RAV4 provides a little extra right-lane passing power on the highway.

  • FUEL ECONOMY: Despite outputting more power that the CR-V, the Toyota RAV4 also gets better gas mileage. RAV4 boasts EPA-estimated efficiency ratings of 35 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined. CR-V manages EPA-estimated ratings of 32 highway and 28 combined. RAV4 also has a slightly larger tank, meaning you can travel farther before needing to stop for gas.

  • STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Like almost every vehicle in Toyota's lineup, the RAV4 is outfitted with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of driver-assistance technologies as standard equipment. That means, regardless of trim level, you get features like a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert, and Dynamic Cruise Control. Many of these features cost extra or are only available on higher trim levels of the CR-V.
